π¨ Storytelling by Colour: A Quick Guide
Colour is like music for your eyes πΆπ
Even when nobody says anything, colours can make people feel something.
1) β WHAT is βColour Psychologyβ? π§ π¨
Colour psychology means:
π Different colours often create different emotions
π Not a strict rule (culture & people vary)
π¬ But itβs a powerful storytelling tool in videos
π In short: Colour = emotion control button
2) π€ WHY does colour change how we feel?
Because our brain connects colours with:
πΏ Nature β blue sky, green plants
π§οΈ Weather β gray clouds, bright sunlight
π Warning signs β red = stop / danger
πΈ Memories β old photos look faded, neon looks modern
So when you change colour in a video, youβre secretly telling the viewer:
π― βThis is how you should feel right now.β
3) ποΈ HOW do editors control colour? (The 4 Big Controls)
Think of colour grading like 4 mood sliders ποΈ
A) π¨ Hue (WHAT colour is it?)
Red, blue, green, yellow etc.
B) π‘ Brightness (HOW light or dark?)
π Brighter = safer / happier
π Darker = serious / scary
C) π Saturation (HOW strong is the colour?)
π₯ High saturation = loud, energetic, playful
π«οΈ Low saturation = calm, serious, sad, real-life
D) β«βͺ Contrast (Light vs Dark difference)
β‘ High contrast = intense, harsh, dramatic
βοΈ Low contrast = soft, gentle, dreamy

5) β Step-by-step: How to choose colour for your edit (WHAT β WHY β HOW)
Step 1οΈβ£: WHAT is the emotion of the scene? π
Pick one main emotion:
happy, calm, sad, tense, angry, mysteriousβ¦
π Why?
If you try to show 3 emotions, the audience gets confused π€―
Step 2οΈβ£: WHY does the character feel that way? βοΈ
Write one sentence:
βShe feels lonely because sheβs left out.β
βHe feels confident because he finally won.β
π Why?
This helps you decide how strong the grade should be (small vs heavy)
Step 3οΈβ£: HOW do you want the viewer to feel? π
Pick one:
π€ Same as character β we feel sad with them
π΅οΈ Different from character β they feel calm, but we feel worried
π Why?
This is how movies create suspense ππ₯
Step 4οΈβ£: Pick your Colour Plan π¨π§Ύ
Fill this mini checklist:
π₯ Warm or βοΈ cool?
π Bright or π dark?
π Saturated or π«οΈ faded?
β‘ Harsh contrast or βοΈ soft contrast?
Step 5οΈβ£: Do the grade (Simple Order) π¬β
When you're in your colour tool, follow this order:
π‘ Fix exposure (too dark/bright?)
βͺ Fix white balance (too orange/blue?)
β« Adjust contrast
π Adjust saturation
π¨ Add colour push (slightly warm/cool)
π Why this order?
If brightness is wrong, colours wonβt look right anyway β
